Why go OVERBOARD with carb-loaded cocktails, candies and expensive cards this Valentine’s Day— when you can impress your Sweetie with a Peruvian Passion Potion and Dark Chocolate Macadamia Hearts which are both Low Carb on the High Seas creations— featuring The Creature from Love Lagoon Free Printable Valentines?
Since The Creature from Love Lagoon comes from a long line of Devonian romantics, he knows a thing or two about Amazonian Aphrodisiacs. So, we’ll shake up a Low-Carb version of the Peruvian Passion Potion, Chilcano de Maracuya, made with delicious Pisco and Passion Fruit!
And, because your love is already sweet enough, we’ll borrow a sugar-free recipe from his twin, The Melekaliki Monster, who uses Macadamia Nuts from The Big Island to create Chocolate Macadamia Hearts. I know you’ll fall head over scales for these easy sugar-free candies! So, let’s stir-up something steamy with melted chocolate and macadamia nuts!
These delicious dark chocolate macadamia hearts will make your Valentine’s heart skip a beat— without all the sugar and carbs, too!
They’re so easy to make, and only take a few minutes! Your Sweetie won’t believe they aren’t expensive boutique treats.
All you’ll need is:
- A sauce pan, water, and a glass bowl to create a double-boiler
- A knife, cutting board, Spatula, measuring spoons and cups
- A silicone heart-shaped mold
- 2 bars of Unsweetened 100% Chocolate
- 4 Tbs Coconut Oil
- 3/4 Cup Powdered Sweetener
- 3/4 Cup Heavy Cream
- Roasted, salted macadamia nuts
First, create a double-boiler, like a steamy Amazonian heatwave— making sure the water level is lower than the glass bowl, and only the steam is doing all the work.
Bring the double-boiler to a simmer, and melt 4 Tbs coconut oil while you rough chop the 2 chocolate bars, and add it to the glass bowl.
Once the Chocolate is melted and glossy, add the heavy cream and powdered sweetener in small alternating batches, stirring gently, and warming the mixture slowly. Too much heat, too fast will result in a less-than-fluid mixture.
Spoon the melted mixture into the silicone heart molds, filling the hearts almost half-way, you can quick-chill them with a few minutes in the freezer, solidifying the chocolate just enough to prevent the macadamia nuts from settling in the bottom of the mold. Once the chocolate is firm, add two or three macadamia nuts to each mold and fill the molds the rest of the way. Pop the Chocolate Macadamia Hearts in the freezer for about 10 minutes, until the chocolates are no longer glossy and begin to pull away from the edges.
And just like the Creature, the chocolates don’t thrive in the cold, either. Over-freezing the chocolates will produce a streaky, uneven appearance when served at room temperature. So, set a timer, and rescue them as soon as they’re set.
And since I live in a near-Amazonian Climate, yes, even in February, I prefer to store my candies in the refrigerator, in an air-tight container, lined with a paper towel to help absorb any condensation, until its time to serve them. If stacking the chocolates, it’s best to use wax paper between the layers.
Chocolate has a well-documented history as an aphrodisiac. And, while modern science has shown the amounts of feel-good chemicals to exist in quantities too small to produce any measurable effects, the fact that you made these chocolates yourself, the Low Carb on the High Seas way, will be so impressive, that your Sweetie will surely swoon!
Now pair hand-made chocolates with the Peruvian Passion Potion, known as Chilcano de Maracuya, and you’ve got yourself a formula for love!
If you’re like me, and fairly new to Pisco, you’ll be happy to know that even though its usually likened to brandy, Peruvian Pisco is produced from grapes, only using the wine and none of the leftovers, which makes it more like a cognac. However, it is one of the purest liquors produced and contains no coloring agents, wood, flavorings, caramel, preservatives, water, sugar, or additives of any kind. So, it’s perfect for a Low Carb on the High Seas remake of Chilcano de Maracuya.
For this Peruvian Passion Potion, we’ll be using:
- 2 oz of Low Carb on the High Seas Passion Fruit Syrup (You can find the easy recipe in my “A Hot Zombie Pajama Party with Coconut Macadamia Bars” episode— or in a pinch, you can simply muddle about 15 cubes of frozen passion fruit with 3 bar-spoons of granulated sweetener to create a passion fruit paste before adding any liquids)
- 3 oz Pisco (I used one made from Quebranta grapes)
- Shake with ice and pour into a tall glass
- Add 4 oz Ginger Ale (I use Goslings Sugar-free)
- Stir gently to combine
- Top with more ice to fill
- Garnish with a few drops Angostura Bitters, a sprig of Mint or Basil (today, I’m doing both), a lime wheel and a straw.
